Started my attachment.

So, I’ve applied for a three week elective posting at the Accident & Emergency department of Queen Elizabeth hospital Tuesday last week, gotten accepted quite immediately & got my papers back by Friday, and started my attachment Monday (yesterday)!

Two days to my attachment I’ve tried my hands on taking blood sample from patients (and succeeded!), tried my luck in inserting a peripheral IV line (in which I was unsuccessful today, will do better tomorrow I promise!), succeeded in injecting tetanus vaccine to the deltoid region and painkillers injected to the buttock region, observed 3 cases of myocardial infarction, accident victims, did a vaginal examination today (OMG! – all under supervision, of course), got offered to do a facial suture but was too scared and chickened out and just assisted instead (rugi sial, tomorrow I must do!), observed lots of many other cases that I sometimes lost track, and finally felt how it was like to stand up for at least 4 hours straight!

Today too I joined an ambulance team in escorting a patient being transferred from the A&E to the HDU, first time in my life! I sound so jakun right now I know hehe.

The doctors, seniors, nurses, medical assistants & paramedics were of great sport down there. Everybody’s so helpful and eager in teaching, and friendly too! Made me feel welcomed almost instantly, and they were always pushing me to try things, even when I’m scared hell. They kept on encouraging me to try out procedures and are always offering me to observe their cases. I am blessed indeed.

I must admit that I am very scared going there every morning, afraid that I’d do wrong, but I’m a student now, and a medical student is supposed to be clueless a little! Hehe. I’m here to learn, so that’s exactly what I’m planning to do for the next three weeks. Wish me luck!
