Words spread that there’d be this free checkup on the eyes open to public from 10am-6pm today, which was held in a pharmacy that mama has been a regular customer to, where they claim to be able to ‘view the status of the body through the eyes’. It was an iridodiagnosis to be exact, in which I’ve never seen/heard of… so of course I went!
So, by definition, iridology (or iridodiagnosis) according to Wikipedia is an alternative medicine technique whose proponents believe that patterns, colors, and other characteristics of the iris can be examined to determine information about a patient's systemic health.
And what the nutritionist at the pharmacy did was, she took a picture of my right and left eyes using her digital camera, and matches it with the iris chart, which look something like this;
And so far I’ve been diagnosed with problems with my shoulders (according to my iris patterns there should be some pain there, should be), was indicated that I have problems with both of my legs, probably broken them before (in which I have absolute no memory of), problems with my nose, possibly sinusitis (and I can assure you I have never had sinusitis my whole life), problems with my bladder and dry vagina that’s caused by dehydration (I, after all, had been fasting for 20 days straight now), stress (who doesn’t?!), and some related stomach/GIT problems.
It’s almost like they go on everywhere until the one correct answer hits, much like reading people, you know the ones that’s bluffing as psychics, where the firm believers will remember only the hits and automatically neglects the many missed.
She was very clear with her words, and she sold her well-promoted processed soy products well.
I may not know that much yet, but from what I’ve learnt in medical school (in which there was even a whole year dedicated to ophthalmology; the branch of medicine which deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye), the only logic examination I know is the one that involves the use of an ophthalmoscope where they see deep inside the fundus of the eye and other structures, crucial in determining the health of the retina and vitreous humor, with the ability to detect and evaluate glaucoma, raised intracranial pressure, diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Logic I say as they observe the minute details of the retinal vessels which correspond to the respective organs mentioned.

Not that I’m all against this newfound growing use technique, believe me I have always been a big fan of alternative medicine; reflexology, naturopathy, herbalism, acupuncture and all that stuff, I grew up with them and one actually live a good life with that.
But fact is fact, and the fact is all these iris patterns, colors and other characteristic feature, they’ve been there since the early years of lives. It is unique to every individual, like a fingerprint, and it’s fine texture remains remarkably stable over many decades, making it extremely reliable as an identification purpose, that only things like severe blunt trauma and nodules (among few others) have been proven to have the ability to cause change in the patterns and structures of the iris.
But then again, these iridology techniques have said to ‘have been able to give people the people to gain accurate information, many times before symptoms of diseases appear and condition of the body’.
So that said, I believe they’re talking about what might happen in the future, and I just have this thing for the things unknown, like who knows right? Again and again, prevention is always better than cure. It might be not that necessary to discard these readings (though I am still skeptical in calling them a diagnosis, since a diagnosis should be determined by complete and precise medical examination of the nature and circumstances of a diseased condition all at once). One can always take the good in this, and consider them as a reminder and advice.
And for me, a reminder for me would be to really work hard for regular exercises and ten glasses of water a day now!
